Yacht Spot › Altair

Anchored in Nimborio Bay....

....moving slowly in the cool Meltemi breeze

The Altair is not a usual superyacht. For the first 23 years of its life, it was a pilot boat in the Dutch Navy, built to the standards that NATO required of ships that could go into battle. Launched in 1974, the 59 metre long boat was constructed to withstand the ice of the far north, and with a steel hull and superstructure, it is strong enough to be frozen solid in ice...though these days, Altair isn't put to this particular test very often.

In 1997 the boat underwent a complete refit at Oceanfast in Perth, Australia, and was launched a second time on the World as a fully-fledged superyacht. There have been a couple of other alterations in the past decade, and now Altair graces the seas providing the rich with luxurious accommodation & style for upto 18 people.

If your bank account can handle it, Altair is for hire. At the time of writing, $210,000 will give you and your guests a week onboard. In the Greek Islands, the terms and conditions of hire are as follows.

"The rate quoted includes the hire of the yacht, the crew's salaries, the insurance of the yacht, the crew's food, sufficient fuel and lubricants for 4 (four) hours cruising per twenty four hours, harbour dues and pilotage within Greek waters, water & ship's laundry. Extra to the charterer's account are guests food and drink, bar, Corinth Canal dues where applicable and port taxes & harbour dues outside Greek waters."

"When they’re in the mood for active pursuits, guests can try their hand at the three PWCs, four kayaks, kneeboard, wakeboard, or even the banana boat kept aboard."

Indeed! The banana boat was enjoying a tour of duty in Nimborio Bay, and featured on one of SymiGreece's daily banner photos

In the 2004 list of the World's largest superyachts, Altair came in at No. 84.
