FAROS News › Second FAROS Vet Clinic: The Success Goes On 16/08/2008, 01:46

The second FAROS clinic has been even more successful than the first one in May this year. In the six days the clinic was operating, 47 animals were seen free of charge by the team of FAROS voluntary vets Tasoula, Lena, Iris and Thea. The treatments this time included many more complicated operations, as well as vaccinations, checkups, general advice, supply and prescription of medicines and, for the first time on Symi, blood tests for dogs.

Below is a day-by-day photo diary of the second FAROS vet clinic:
- Day 1: Blood Tests for Dogs
- Day 2: Time for Surgery
- Day 3: Mickie & Friends
- Day 4: First Biopsy
- Day 5: Cats & Dogs
- Day 6: 100 Patients

FAROS may be just a few months old, but we have managed to fully equip the clinic and in collaboration with the University of Thessaloniki, we offer the high standard of animal care that is expected from any vet clinic to operate safely and legally. In addition, the details of all animals treated were recorded and are now part of the University's treatment records. Over the first two FAROS clinics a total of 102 animals have been treated by the vets. When starting FAROS four months ago, we never expected this level of response from the people of Symi.

Despite operating the clinic in the heart of summer when most people are busy and the temperature is in the forties during the day, the vets were busy for the whole time, morning and evening with only a short break for lunch.

For this second visit FAROS spent 1,471 Euros. This includes 15 complete blood test kits for dogs, new equipment (e.g. otoscope), vaccinations, medicines, consumables, return flight tickets, and other minor expenses (petrol, phone calls, cleaning, etc.)

Up to the time of writing, we have collected 1,396 Euros via donations since the first FAROS vet clinic at the begining of May. This includes donations during the week of the vet clinic, online donations, the FAROS collection boxes as well as direct donations. In other words, we have managed to recoup almost the whole cost of this visit and we hope that with the continuing support of our sponsors and the people we will be in a position to continue meeting all costs via voluntary donations without the need for the members of FAROS to use their own money to pay for any shortfall. We also hope to be able to buy more specialised equipment and offer blood tests for an even larger number of animals.

FAROS would like to thank everyone who made the second FAROS clinic such a success and of course our sponsors George Kalodoukas from Kalodoukas Holidays and Kostas Sykallos from Symi Tours. Despite being in the middle of the tourist season, Kalodoukas Holidays donated the accommodation for the vets in a beautiful villa in Horio, and Symi Tours donated a hire car and paid for the boat tickets.

We are already working towards the next vet visit which is scheduled to take place towards the end of September/beginning of October. The specific dates will be announced soon.

"Thank You" does not convey my feelings towards FAROS and all of those involved.
