FAROS News › Become a Member of FAROS! 22/09/2008, 01:30

In the five months since it started, FAROS has equipped and ran two vet clinics (at a cost of 4,417 euros), treated over a hundred animals at the highest level of care, and raised 2,697 euros via voluntary donations. It also supplies and administers vaccinations for cats and dogs at any time and can provide veterinary advice between visits by being in close contact with the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the university of Thessaloniki.

FAROS’s other aims are to raise awareness about the care of the stray animals that live among us, encourage everyone to take their own animals to the vet by offering a free service and give an informed and authoritative view about animal welfare on Symi.

In the last two editions of the “The News of Symi” newspaper, FAROS wrote regarding the collapse in the number of feral (“unowned”) cats, the consequent rise in rat numbers and what could be done from now on. We are pleased to report that the advice of FAROS has been listened to and that this year there will be no snatching and neutering of feral cats by the British vet brought each autumn to Symi by a small group of non-Greek residents. This vet will still be coming mostly, it seems, for those who refuse to bring their animals to the Greek vets of FAROS.

After the success of the first five months, we feel it is time to take FAROS forward. In the next few weeks, FAROS will become a registered animal welfare organisation with all the necessary rules and regulations required under Greek Law. As a result, FAROS will have an elected committee, registered members, and a written constitution. The necessary legal work has already been started and we hope that all paperwork will be complete within the next couple of months.

A number of people have already expressed their intention to become FAROS members and we hope that many more will decide to be part of a Symi-based organisation for the welfare of the animals. An annual membership fee of 25 Euros will go towards covering the legal costs, and like all donations, anything left over will help with running the FAROS vet clinics throughout the year. Anyone can be a FAROS member, whether a resident or a visitor to Symi. If you would like to help FAROS by becoming a member, you can do so by contacting FAROS by email, phone:00306945821782, or by filling in the form below.

While FAROS members sign up and the legal paperwork is underway, we are working towards the next FAROS vet clinic which is now scheduled for October 2008. We hope to be able to announce the exact dates as soon as possible. As always, all relevant announcements will be made by the Municipality, the Symi Radio and the SymiGreece.com website as well as via new FAROS posters which will appear around Symi.

Apologies for the "link". It wasn't meant as an online sign up. But I will now create an "expression of interest" page that people can use. FAROS will then contact everyone directly and arrange all the details.

You guys are doing all the hard work - really glad we can help with donations. PS: Could you check on the 9 cats we fed for 2 weeks at Villa Makrakis last week, I'm worried no-one's feeding them Whiskas twice a day now (hopefully someone is...) Cheers. Kate

I know how to make a hat with cat ears...how about that instead of a badge Will? (Oh the benefits of being an occupational therapist).
