It was the third time in four days that I went to the police station this morning. The occasion wasn't a pleasant one, and extremely rare for Symi. Last Friday morning a very good friend of mine was physically assaulted in the street by someone waiting to collect customers arriving on the Pride. The incident was witnessed by dozens of people at about 9:30am. This is the latest in a series of incidents involving this person who has now moved on from verbal abuse to physical violence, and can count at least three different people among his victims in the past year. My friend has made a formal complaint to the police (I was there to assist with the translations) and the assault has been formally reported. I really hope this is the very last time someone on Symi will be assaulted, threatened or intimated by this person, his partner or anyone else associated with him or his business.
The rest of the morning was far more enjoyable walking around the Harbour taking the shots for today' photos (my responsibility today!). Symi is at its busiest during the day and there must be dozens of different guided groups that walk around the Harbour in the late morning heat. There were strong winds all over Greece last weekend, but here, all we felt was a nice breeze which is now expected to die down with the temperature rising to the late 30s again over the next few days. With two round tiropitas and a red bull in the bag, I took the long return home walking up the path high up the rock between Mouragio and Mavrovouni (see photo to the right), which is one of my favourite Harbour walks with maybe the best views of Yialos (the photo on top is taken from the top of the path). I'm now sitting on my balcony with a nice cold wine, Alkistis sings just for me on the iPod and Shell and Mikroulis occupy a corner each opposite me. The sun is about to set and the view from my balcony towards Pitini is golden beautiful! |
