My SymiJordTraditional Greek Music 15/07/2007, 19:32

I admit, that I'm not so big on Greek music. More actually the modern Greek music which to me sounds a little dated. But the Greek music at Kantirimi is very different. It's Rembetika.

Wikipedia notes that this type of music evolved from the urban poor. It's heartfelt music, and has to be sang with some passion if it's to sound right. What I love about it the most though is how it draws everyone together, as was the case last night, with the Kantirimi Greek Night starting up again after a 2 month break.

Agapitos has these evenings every Saturday in the winter, and sometimes stops them in the summer as some of the locals are visiting the bars that are closed in the winter. But last year he ran them through the summer, and hopefully he's going to do the same this year. I know the festival starts in the next 10 days, but it's very difficult to hear live Greek music in Yialos. So, if it's on, and your around, I recommend you looking in!
