Josie turned to me and said. "Wouldn't it be great to live on Symi". I chuckled and said something about winning the lottery.

When we returned to the UK, we started talking more seriously about the fact that we needed to make a change. We were both working in Carlisle, and the next 30 years were mapped out in front of us. But it was not what we wanted. Because of the type of work I do, there were no other real opportunities in Carlisle, so it was more likely to move to another part of the UK. But where? Near my parents? Move South? Move further North? And then Symi was mentioned again. Yes, by Josie.
I'd always wanted to eventually go freelance. Josie too. Cost of living in Greece was lower, so this gave us a chance. We'd made friends here, loved the climate, and were always happiest when we were in Symi. Not just because we were in the 'holiday bubble', but something we think suited us here, that didn't exist in the UK. Maybe something to do with values. After saving for over a year, (you don't have to win the lottery) we arrived on Symi April 24th 2003. We're still here, and as happy as when we arrived then.
To be honest, looking back, I can't quite believe we did it. In fact that thought goes through my head most days.

It can be tough at times. I know that can be difficult to believe. But you DO have to work very hard to stay on Symi. But there's a saying from my parents, which rings in our ears. 'You get one life'. I know it states the obvious. But it's more of a question. How will you make the most of yours?
