My SymiWillFoods from home 31/03/2008, 19:23

If there's one thing I can't stand (there are lots, actually!) it's what I call "Food Fascism". I'll give you an example of a typical food-fascist situation:

Will : Mmmm! Look at this bowl of Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup. I love it, it's so tasty! My favourite soup, by far.

Food Fascist : Soup from a tin!! I don't know how you can put that stuff into your body.

Will : ...because it tastes damn yummy!

Food Fascist : It tastes nothing like tomato, is the wrong consistency for tomato soup, and is packed full of sugar and colouring. It's horrible. Can't you have proper tomato soup instead?

Will : It is "proper", thank you very much! and it tastes far nicer than these cartons of watery, spicy, herby soups that cost three times as much.

Food Fascist : You have an uncultured pallet.

Will : I suppose you're one of those who only eat posh cheeses, has to have fancy chutneys rather than Branston Pickle, never eats anything from a tin, and would rather die before eating baked beans or going to a chip shop. Worst of all, you always have to preach at us because we don't agree with you.

Food Fascist : Well at least I care about my food!

Will : ...at least I'm not a fat snob like you!

etc., etc.

Symi, fortunately, can cater for both the food fascist and those who just like what they like. At the tavernas and restaurants you will get the most delicious meals cooked for you night after night. I found, to my great pleasure last summer, that I needn't be embarassed to ask for a big plate of chips & egg at Yianni's Taverna in Yialos (thanks Mike!) and to wolf it down as Christos ate feta psiti, Symi garidakia, and grilled barbouni. Greek food is delicious (the melitzanosalata at Aris is to die for!) but some people may find the choice & the new tastes to be a bit daunting, especially when they have small children who turn their nose up at anything new to them. For many, self-catering is the best option, so I went today to Taxas and Armara supermarkets down in Yialos to see what they had to offer.

The fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish you can find on Symi are simply delicious and there is every kind of booze you can imagine, but you can also find a taste of home.
