My SymiWillAbba, Nimborio, Barbie and Obama 04/11/2008, 23:13

It's...let me check...9:40 in the evening here on Symi on the 4th November 2008. I'm listening to very loud ABBA coming out of Christos's iPod via the perfectly decent £50-from-Currys-hifi left in the house by the people we bought if off. The TV is showing pictures from CNN with the sound muted...John McCain is gesticulating like a prat and Senator Jo Liebermann is nodding like a demented puppet behind him (what a pillock.) Next to me is a very large Metaxa. I have had several already.

Bjorn and Benny are now singing...

...take a chance, take a chance...

At the same time, Agnetha and Anni-Frid are singing...

...there's so much that I wanna do when I dream I'm alone with you....take a chance on me...

In another universe and time, I may well have let them. They would have had to ask very nicely, of course.

This morning...well, this morning passed me by, I'm afraid. I didn't even wake up until 1:30pm. Do I have an excuse for this laziness? No, none at all. I think I was pretending I was still a student.

Look at me now...will I ever learn...I don't how...I suddenly lose control...Mamma Mia, here I go again...

Christos crawled out of the pit before I did. He has a remarkable way of looking (almost) as bad as I do first thing in the day, but after 20 minutes in the bathroom he looks sickeningly young, fit, buff and healthy....not that I'm complaining too much, mind you. I sport eyebags the size of suitcases until sunset most days. If I go to Kantirimi (as is usual) the suitcases are a permanent fixture.

I've had a few little love affairs...they didn't last very long and they've been pretty scarce...don't go wasting your emotion...lay all your love on me

Christos suggested we go for a swim at Nimborio. This was an agreeable suggestion. I like the walk and we'd be able to check on the Nimborio-donkey-path progress.

"Su per per troo per per!!

Of course, it took an hour to get up, get dressed, clean my old fat body, feed the cats, pack the beach-bag, leave the house, catch the cats that had rushed into the house as soon as we opened the door, leave the house again, empty the yard of cats, feed the cats more food, and finally set off up the road to the beach.

Once at Nimbrio....

...I believe in angels...something good in everything I see...I believe in angels...when I know the time is right for me...

...we changed into our swimming cossies and dived straight in. The water is still quite pleasant and there was no need to stand with the waves splashing at my knees for five minutes getting the courage to take the plunge. Christos ALWAYS takes at least ten minutes but I'm much more of a man and plunge straight in. That was a huge lie, by the way.

I don't wanna talk...about things we've gone though...though it's hurting me...now it's history...

I always get sad when I'm swimming and know it's my last swim of the summer. Usually, this happens on the last day of my September Symi visit, but with so much time spent on Symi this year, and with the weather so undependable (just when WILL it get cold here...hmmph!!) the last swim of the season has been pushed into November. I recovered two big sea urchin shells from the seabed (OK..from about a metre below the surface) and saw a HUGE spiny sea-wormy-thing ('cos I had my mask and snorkel), so not a bad swim all round.

I also saw a bare frenchman's bottom, as one does at Nimborio. It was hairy.

Where are those happy days...they seem so hard to find...I try to reach for you...but you have lost your mind...

After a walk back up the donkey path, we were back at the house, showered, in different clothes, and down the steps to get some more photos for SymiGreece. There was a big yacht in the harbour...so nice to see that they can still call in in November. "Abigaille" wasn't quite up to Yacht Spot status, but quite nice nonetheless.

Chiquitita tell me the truth...I'm a shoulder you can cry on...your best friend...and one you can rely on...

Within half an hour, Christos announced that he was content that we had enough photos for the day, and we set off to Kantirimi for a toastie, an ouzo, and several games of tavli. I have been losing badly at tavli for the past two weeks. I win one game and Christos wins the next eleven. Today was no different and I am becoming convinced that one of the following is true a) God really does exist and hates me, b) Satan really does exist and hates me, c) the dice hate me (I need no convincing they exist), d) the tavli board hates me, e) Kantirimi Bar hates me...or f) I'm crap at tavli compared to Christos (or anyone else probably...even Claudia beats me). I am unsure which of these my rational, scientific mind should accept as a testable hypothesis. What do you think?

...there was something in the air that night...the stars so bright...

When Christos's cheese toastie arrived, so did Barbie. She must have smelled it. He's mean and didn't give her so much as a crust. I am a much nicer man. I gave her six McVities "Fruits of the Forest Yoghurt-topped Digestive Biscuits" which she adored. She sat with me for the next hour as I got progressively drunker and lost even more tavli games. Agapitos has been inventive with the nibbles at Kantirimi lately and we've been treated to allsorts (not the licourice variety, though)...today it was cheesy chunks for Christos and yummy sausage bites for me. I shared these with Barbie. I even fed her half of Christos's cheese during those moments when he was pointing at me and laughing at my atrocious tavli performance. He's a terrible winner. Honest.

...we've done it all before and now we're back to get some more, you know what I mean... voulez vous...take it now or leave it...

Christos went off to Taxas, leaving me at Kantirimi to make an origami horse out of the front page of a copy of the Symi Vomitor (only the front page will do!!). I also took the opportunity to have another ouzo and banish the tavli board. Barbie was in a terrible quandary about who she was going to stay with, me or Christos. She chose me. I still had biscuits and sausage.

...gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight...

During the summer, when we climbed the steps upto the house, Barbie didn't bother to follow us; she knew that she was getting attention and tidbits elsewhere without the hassle of the climb. With the season over (and the jewellery shops shut) she is once more down in the harbour area all day and has begun to follow us up to the house again where she eats the cats' food and waits for us until the next time we go out. I'm hoping that she's being fed and looked after and won't become a shaking, skinny wreck again like she was at the end of last winter. We'll keep an eye on her, and I hope many other people will do the same.

...they passed me by...all of those great romances...

Barack Obama is now on CNN talking at a rally somewhere in the U.S.A. I do hope that he'll be Pres-Elect by the time the sun rises over Symi in the morning. Christos and I will stay up until very late watching the results coming in. After the cretinous Bush stole the last two elections and foisted himself upon his country and the World, I'm hoping that the next Commander-in-Chief won't be a murderous, lieing, terrorist, child-killing, insane Thief-in-Chief like he was. Oh for God's sake! McCain is just a clunking bore! Come on America! Obama!! Obama!! Obama!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I trust in you...Would you let me down?...Would you laugh at me, if I said I cared for you?...What's the name of the game?

I've just this minute received two late emails asking me if I can complete two new statistical analyses for an HIV/AIDS conference this week. I have to have it done by the morning...so I'd better sober up and get to it...hopefully I'll finish it all by the time the election results start coming in...

..at Waterloo, Napoloeon did surrender....the history book on the shelf...is always repeating itself...

...look into his Angel Eyes...you'll think you're in Paradise...

Oh! Yes please!
