Final discussions are underway regarding the new floating jetty that is being planned at the Pitini side of the harbour (in front of the petrol station). The Municipality of Symi have asked for a technical specification and quote for the work involved (extending the existing platform in front of the petrol station) which is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of the Aegean and Island Policy in the next few days. The Minister, Mr Aristotelis Pavlidis, has pledged that his Ministry will cover the cost. According to SymiGreece sources, the cost will be in the region of 650,000 Euros. If all goes to plan and the Ministry pays for the work, it is envisaged that the new platform can be finished before the end of June. As soon as this happens, the Blue Star Ferry "Diagoras" is expected to start including Symi in its subsidised route between Pireus and Rhodes.

While the ferry connection between Symi and Pireus seems to depend upon the decision regarding the new jetty, changes to the ferries serving Symi are expected in the next few days. As reported by SymiGreece last month, "SAOS II" (a boat owned by SAOS Ferries) is expected to replace the "Proteus" in the subsidised inter-island route (Rhodes-Symi-Tilos-Nisiros-Kos) from May 2007. SAOS II was servicing the Alexandroupoli-Samothraki route in the north of Greece and made its final trip on that route last Sunday. It is expected to arrive in the Dodekanese in the next couple of weeks. ANES have sold the "Proteus" to SAOS Ferries and it will now be employed in the same Alexandroupoli-Samothraki route from next month. The "Proteus" will make it's last trip from Symi on Saturday 28th April.

In the meantime, everyone is expecting ANES's new boat to arrive on Symi. "Agios Nektarios" is expected to do a daily service between Symi and Rhodes, starting in May.
