Following a “people’s assembly” last Sunday at the Symi Town Hall, a decision was reached to escalate the protest in relation to the lack of a direct ferry connection with Pireus. Following the closure of the Municipality last month, the Symi Council has yesterday approved the decision of the people’s assembly and confirmed that no politician will be welcomed at the official premiere of the Symi Festival scheduled for this Saturday 21 July. As a result all official invitations have been cancelled. In a statement issued by the Town Hall, the Government is accused of deception for the lack of a direct ferry link with Pireus for the past nine months.
Apart from cancelling the invitations to politicians for the premiere of the Festival, the people’s assembly on Sunday also decided the following:
- No Municipal building will be offered and no Council employees will be available for the running of the General Election if no permanent solution is found by then.
- The necessary legal proceedings will be followed so that the Council, businesses and residents are compensated for loss of income as a result of the lack of a direct ferry service with Pireus.
- Citizens who are members of the National Guard are asked to hand their guns to the authorities as a way of protest for the isolation of the island.
- The Government is asked to agree and fund, as soon as possible, for the construction of a new port according to the submitted plans (which were funded by the Municipality), thus permanently solving the problem.
- The Council is to take legal advice as to the best way to “take responsibility” for the failure by the central Government to abide with specific sections of the Constitution and for a request for all taxes paid by local residents to be diverted to a special fund administered by the Municipality.
- The closure of the Symi Harbour at a time and for a duration that the Council will decide.
