Starting at the end of November 2008, a new winter tourism programme is being implemented by the Municipality of Symi in collaboration with ANES. The programme will aim to bring tourists to Symi every weekend (Friday to Sunday). The Municipality has been in talks with ANES and the owners of hotels and in the past few days the Councillors have voted in favour of the programme.
According to the agreement, the Municipality will subsidise the boat tickets to and from Rhodes for every visitor with a confirmed booking with a hotel on Symi. The transportation will be with ANES boats and every Sunday the Proteas will depart from Symi to Rhodes at 15:30.
The Municipality has asked for reasonable prices and a high-standard of service from the owners of hotels and restaurants. There are 8 hotels/agencies that have agreed to participate in the programme and the price per room will vary between 30-50 Euros a night. The hotels/agencies are:
- Iapetos Hotel
- Opera House
- Nireas
- Kokona
- Katherinettes
- Kalodoukas Holidays
- Gray’s
- Venetsiana
In addition, the Municipality has started an advertising campaign via newspapers and radio stations to attract as many winter visitors to the island as possible. Even though it’s still early days, the island is already a lot busier than in previous winters and an increased number of bars, shops and restaurants will remain open this winter.

Very interesting! Can you tell us which months would be considered 'winter' for this plan please?

It would certainly be until the end of February, but if the programme is successful, I 'd guess March will be included as well.
There are also plans to organise cultural events (mostly centred around Greek music) as part of the programme.

Great! Thank you.
Now if I can just work out some flights...

Air Aegean is very cheap atm, Patricia. They've just announced an extra daily flight which makes it easier to connect with your Athens to Rhodes legs. We'll probebly be using it on the way back after Xmas.
The winter tourism thing is a good idea. Let's just hope those hotels stay sub-50.

Just as addendum to that, you still have to stay over in Rhodesas the latest boat to Symi is a Tuesday at 19:15. But at least there's not morre choice. If you pay a bit extra and hop on an Olympic flight for the Athens-Rhodes section you don't have to hang around Athens airport and can be in Rhodes by 7.30.
