A desalination plant, which will operate using a pioneering new method, is at the final stages of being commissioned. In accordance with Greek Law, the Prefecture of the Dodecanese issued a statement asking that anyone who has any comments or objections to the proposed study should make these within 30 days (until 18th June 2007).
According to the study, the desalination plant will work using renewable energy (a wind turbine) converting sea water into drinkable water. The German company that expressed interest in constructing the plant has said that the water which will be produced will be very high quality and a lot better than what is currently available on the island. The method uses water evaporation to separate out the salt and any other unwanted materials and then liquification of the vapour via compression.
The project is financed by the European Union (45%) and the Municipality of Symi (55%). The cost according to the study will be 1,714,000 Euro. Once the work is commissioned and contracts signed, it will take about 8 months for the plant to be completed and start the production of drinkable water. It is expected that the project will be completed before the end of 2008.
