Symi Art Exhibition @ the Nautical Museum 27 June 2009
The 1st Symi art competition by FAROS for Symi’s school children has concluded with great success. The competition was officially approved by the Ministry of Education and had the protection and care of Symi’s animals as its subject. About 100 children, mainly from the nursery and primary schools, took part and FAROS would like to thank the school authorities in Yialos and Horio for responding to the invitation and giving encouragement to the children. We hope that next year, the competition will attract even more students.
All the competition entries will be presented in an exhibition at the Grand Hall of the Nautical Museum in Yialos on Saturday 27 June 2009 with free entrance for everyone. During the exhibition, FAROS together with the Municipal Cultural Centre and the Mayor of Symi will hand out commemorative diplomas to every child who took part in the competition. The exhibition will also be available online.
FAROS contacted many of the artists who live on Symi and asked them to judge the competition. The chosen pieces have been included in a Calendar for 2010 which is now available online. The Calendar can also be found at several locations around Symi.
FAROS would like to thank EFG Design who donated the design and printing of the calendar and the Municipal Cultural Centre of Symi for giving the Naurical Museum for the exhibition.

Symi Art Competition 26 January 2009
When FAROS started in April 2008, it’s main aim was to operate a fully-equipped voluntary vet clinic on Symi offering free veterinary care to all the animals of the island as well as to give an informed and authoritative view about animal welfare on Symi.
Over and above the running of the vet clinic, FAROS as a animal welfare organisation, also aims to raise awareness among the people for the need to care about all animals that live around us, pets and strays, so that there are no more ill, hungry and wretched animals that live or are slowly dying amongst us. FAROS also tries to contribute towards the eradication of violence towards animals and incidents of ill-treatment of animals that unfortunately often come to the light. Poisoning stray cats and dogs and chilling stories of maltreatment of animals (mainly cats) even by small children insult us all as human beings and shame us as citizens of a law-abiding society.
As part of the FAROS initiative to highlight the protection of the animals of Symi as an important element of civilisation and contribute towards the strengthening of a new ethos in the relationship between the people and the island's animals, we call upon all young people of Symi to take part in the first Symi art competition that FAROS is organising with the protection and care of the animals of Symi as its subject.
The competition is directed to the island’s school children, from infant up to secondary school, will last for about 3 months and will end on the 10th of April when schools break for the Easter holidays. Those who wish to take part in the competition can choose whichever kind of art they like: from painting or any other kind of handicraft (e.g. micro-sculpture, collage, 3-D constructions, etc.) to “modern art”, photography and video. The only restriction is for the subject matter of the works of art to be related to the animals of Symi.
After the end of the competition, FAROS will organise an art exhibition at a suitable location in Symi with free entrance for the public where all competition entries will be exhibited. The exhibition will also be available online on SymiGreece.com so that visitors from the whole of Greece and the rest of the World can view the works of art even if there are not on Symi during that time. During the exhibition, and after suitable appreciation, FAROS will award the best works of art by category, age, etc. Moreover, the awarded pieces will be included in a Symi Calendar that FAROS will publish in the summer of 2009 which will be available for sale all around Symi and also online. The proceeds from the sale will be given for the financial support of FAROS.
Apart from this first announcement, FAROS will be in contact with all the island’s schools to promote this initiative to attract as many young people as possible to take part in the art competition. We ‘d like to hope that with the support of teachers and parents, we will be able to establish the competition, improve it, and repeat it in future years.

Brilliant initiative as always. It'll also be good to get the children thinking about the Islands animals.
